Redis is fast; its capacity is still finite
Distinguish client pool limits, request deadlines, rate limits and bounded command batches.
Redis can be overwhelmed by too much work, large payloads, expensive commands or many clients competing for the same resources. Making every slice element a goroutine only moves pressure downstream. Treat the server, the network and the client pool as separate budgets.
Understand what a client pool limits
A shared client normally reuses connections. Creating a new client for each request defeats that reuse. A connection-pool setting is not automatically a global rate limiter, and waiting for a connection still consumes request time. Exact option semantics depend on the client version; read its production documentation.
Give each operation a bounded lifetime
This native Go fragment assumes a configured shared go-redis client. Missing keys and infrastructure failures are different cases. The request context carries the parent lifetime; the shorter local timeout bounds this particular operation.
ctx, cancel := context.WithTimeout(requestCtx, 150*time.Millisecond)
defer cancel()
value, err := client.Get(ctx, key).Result()
switch {
case errors.Is(err, redis.Nil):
// Cache miss: use the documented fallback.
case err != nil:
return fmt.Errorf("cache lookup: %w", err)
default:
use(value)
}150 ms is an example, not a universal Redis timeout. Configure and verify client network timeouts as well; do not assume a context deadline replaces every transport setting.
Batch for efficiency without removing limits
Pipelining can reduce network round trips, but an enormous pipeline can increase queued work and memory. Bound batch size and total payload, avoid broad scans or expensive hot-path commands, and monitor server latency, errors, pool waits and command volume. Test fallback behavior too: when the cache slows, a sudden flood of misses can overload the database behind it.
TAKE THIS WITH YOU
Limit work before it reaches Redis. A pool, timeout, rate limiter and bounded pipeline solve different parts of the capacity problem.
